In April
2024, Nutrientes Magazine issued a study under the title Do Herbal
Supplments and Probiotics Complement Antibiotics and Diet in the Management of
SIBO? A Randomized Clinical Trial1.
This
research was centered around the role of probiotics and phytotherapy
supplements as a complement to the treatment for bacterial overgrowth in the
small intestine (SIBO) with antibiotics and diet. The trial concluded that,
even if the use of these supplements does not seem to improve the results in
the SIBO diagnosing test, they could induce a significant clinical
improvement in the medium-term in a particular type of SIBO, especially
in methane SIBO.
Among the
probiotics used in this study, we can find Soria Natural’s probiotic Probinflam.
This product is formulated based on three gastro-resistant probiotic strains (Bifidobacterium
longum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium bifidum), vitamins C, E, B3,
B6, B2, B1 and folic acid.
Professionals
from the Valencian Digestive Institute (IVADI), from the Digestive System Service
of Internal Medicine of Sagunto Hospital (Valencia), and the Department of
Pharmacology, Paediatrics and Chemistry of the University Miguel Hernández from
Elche (Alicante) have participated in this study, directed by Lucía
Redondo-Cuevas.
This is not
the only research in this matter. A meta-analysis of 18 studies from 2017 found
that probiotics are associated to a significant improvement of SIBO, if
compared to therapies without probiotics (6 studies, relative risk, 1.6; 95%
IC, 1.2-2.2)2.
